Power electronics is the art of solid state electronics for conversion and control of electric power in an efficient, clean, compact, and robust manner for convenient utilisation. The word Power Electronics combines three terms namely power, electronics and control. Power Electronic principles are meant to handle only a few milliwatts, large linear audio amplifiers are rated at a few thousand watts.
Power:- Power is the term related with the generation, transmission and distribution of electric power.
Electronics:- It deals with the slid state devices and circuits to process the signal for meeting certain objectives.
Control:- It deals with the steady state dynamic characteristics of a closed loop control system.

Power Electronics involves the study of

  1. Power semiconductor devices - their physics, characteristics, drive requirements and their protection for optimum utilisation of their capacities,
  2. Power converter topologies involving them,
  3. Control strategies of the converters,
  4. Digital, analogue and microelectronics involved,
  5. Capacitive and magnetic energy storage elements,
  6. Rotating and static electrical devices,
  7. Quality of waveforms generated,
  8. Electro Magnetic and Radio Frequency Interference, 
  9. Thermal Management

Principle of Power Electronics:-

  1. Power electronics is based on the principle of switching of the power semiconductor devices. Power handling capacity and speed are the two most important criterion related t power devices.
  2. The microprocessors and microcontrollers are being used for synthesizing the control strategies of the power semiconductor devices.
  3. In short power conductors act as muscles and microprocessors act as brain for a modern power electronics equipment.
